Nutrition Professionals of the Month - Dale Crookes & Sophie Farrer
Nutrition and dietetic duo, Dale Crookes and Sophie Farrer both work within the Secure Inpatients Services at Roseberry Park Hospital in Middlesbrough in the North East of England.
Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, the virus was described as ‘a great equaliser’ since celebrities, politicians, and even members of the royal family fell ill with it. In addition to the direct impact of the virus on individuals, it’s important to recognise the wider impact of the national lockdown rules on the lives of many they seek to protect.
Whilst it is important to recognise and acknowledge stress at any time, it seems particularly poignant at present with Covid-19 pandemic placing more stress than ever on everyone. This year, International Stress Awareness Week provides a platform for stress and mental health problems to be in the spotlight, with insights from around the world.
Unprecedented recent events have significantly affected dietary intake, which is likely to have a subsequent impact on nutritional status and malnutrition risk. While the government has prioritised tackling overnutrition, it could be argued that undernutrition has been somewhat overlooked, despite it having a significant impact at an individual and public health level.
Lucy Upton is a Specialist Paediatric Dietitian with 10 years’ experience. She currently works full time for the NHS at a busy children’s hospital, alongside keeping herself busy with various freelance ventures alongside including running her own private clinic.
